The opulent El Palace Barcelona combines history and character with an unbeatable location and excellent food offering
Words: Selma Day
El Palace Barcelona has a storied past. Originally the Hotel Ritz and Barcelonaâs first five-star hotel, it is one of the cityâs most historic places to stay, welcoming over the years creative figures such as Salvador DalĂ, Pablo Picasso, Joan MirĂł, Josephine Baker, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra and Carlos Ruiz ZafĂłn, among many others.
The hotel has also played a role in fashion â in the 1940s, the Grand Hall became a prominent stage for fashion shows and social events, including the celebrated âfashion teaâ gatherings, which brought together designers, creatives, the highest echelons of Barcelona society and royalty.
Located moments from Passeig de GrĂ cia, the Gothic Quarter and some of the cityâs most prestigious boutiques and restaurants, El Palace Barcelona continues to play a role in the cityâs social and cultural life, evolving with the times while preserving the character that has defined the hotel since it opened in 1919.
The 114 rooms and suites are designed in a signature neoclassical style but with a contemporary feel and come with lush marble bathrooms and city views. Original architectural details, including fireplaces selected by CĂŠsar Ritz, sit alongside modern pieces such as Roche Bobois desks and tailored furnishings.
The four Art Suites are inspired by former guests (Ritz, DalĂ, MirĂł and Ruiz ZafĂłn) and the two El Palace Suites pay homage to Josephine Baker â and Ronnie Wood. The suite reflects the Rolling Stones guitaristâs connection to El Palace Barcelona, where he lived during extended stays. Separate living and dining areas, a private balcony and a top-floor setting define the space, which is shaped by art deco design and Woodâs personal style.
Gastronomy is at the heart of the hotel, with Amar Barcelona, a contemporary Mediterranean seafood restaurant that is a partnership with chef Rafa Zafra of El Bulli fame, the star of the show. The food is rooted in exceptional produce and seasonality, with a menu that focuses on seafood and coastal flavours, alongside a selection of Catalan classics.
Breakfast is served in the JardĂn, a light-filled space on the ground floor defined by its black, white and green palette and combination of indoor and outdoor seating, while the Grand Hall is the social heart of El Palace Barcelona and offers all-day dining. The menu features a changing selection throughout the day, including tapas, seasonal dishes and lighter options.
Inspired by the romantic gardens and residence of Francesc CambĂł â a prominent early 20th century Catalan statesman and patron of the arts â and the paintings of modernist artist Ramon Casas, the Rooftop Garden is a lovely retreat above the city, offering panoramic views across Barcelona, including the Sagrada FamĂlia, the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world.
At the opposite end, a pool inspired by Roman baths anchors the terrace, while the solarium â the highest point of the hotel â offers a more secluded setting with 360-degree views.
The spa at El Palace Barcelona offers traditional rituals combined with contemporary treatments using products from French skincare house Anne Semonin. One of the highlights is the temazcal, a pre-Hispanic sauna set within a volcanic dome. The experience draws on ancestral practices using heat, water and aromatic herbs, creating an immersive ritual designed to relax the body and restore balance. Perfect after a day of sightseeing in this beautiful city.
