This May, Jamavar, the Michelin-starred Indian restaurant on Mount Street, Mayfair, will be celebrating India’s Alphonso mango, a fruit that has earnt itself a hallowed spot on the culinary calendar. Available throughout May when the mangoes are at their ripest, Culinary Director & Executive Chef Surender Mohan’s specially designed seasonal menu champions the fleeting joy of the much-adored fruit, in Jamavar’s signature Pan-Indian style.

To start, guests will be served chaat with a tart twist: potato tikki on a bed of spiced white peas, balanced with bitter raw mango. Diners can then choose from a selection of meat or vegetarian dishes such as a whole Tellicherry Pepper & Garlic Soft Shell Crab, accompanied by a sharp and spicy homemade mango chilli chutney and crisp garlic chips; and marinaded Kasundi Paneer Tikka paired with mango three ways.

Main dishes include south-Indian recipes from The Nair family archives such as the Meen Manga Curry, featuring tender sea bass and raw mango cooked with fenugreek and Kerala spiced coconut milk; and Mango Puliserry, a curry made from Alphonso, coconut and yogurt with tempered mustard and chilli; both of which are served with Thoran, Aloo Palak, Dal Jamavar, Steamed Rice and Assorted Breads. For dessert, Burnt Mango Tart will be paired with a fresh Alphonso salsa and mango sorbet.

Jamavar's resident bar team will also be on hand to welcome guests with a freshly prepared Mango Lassi or one of their signature botanical cocktails, such as the Ginger Mango Mule, Achaari Margarita or Fruit & Nut sour.

Co-founder Samyukta Nair says, “The Alphonso mango season has become something of an obsession in India, synonymous with both spring and summer. That distinct, delicious flavour has allowed for the creation of iconic delicacies across the country, which is what we aim to replicate – with some of Jamavar’s characteristic flair” Surender adds, “Known as ‘King of Mangoes’, the Alphonso is the perfect way to sooth the kick of spicy food. We’re looking forward to sharing this unbeatable combination with our guests.”
