The Four Seasons Astir Palace – just 30 minutes from the historic centre of Athens – was last month voted one of the 50 best hotels in the world, coming in at number 27. And it’s easy to see why. Firstly, the location is drop-dead gorgeous – tucked away at the tip of the pine-clad Vouliagmeni peninsula on the Athens Riviera, the views are stunning. It’s a setting that over the years has attracted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren, Aristotle and Jackie Onassis, Maria Callas and The Beatles.

Open all year round, the resort still draws a glamorous crowd but the vibe is laid-back luxury. There’s a range of accommodation to suit all tastes, with 200 rooms, 42 luxury suites and 61 beachfront bungalows. Each of the three distinct spaces that make up the resort blend Greek elegance with modern comfort, featuring private balconies with sweeping pine grove or Aegean Sea views. Select suites and bungalows offer private infinity pools and direct beach access. The beauty of the Four Seasons Astir Palace is its proximity to both the airport as well as the cultural treasures of Athens such as the Acropolis. You can combine a city and resort stay or base yourself at the resort and nip into the city when you choose.

There are three swimming pools - the Nafsika Pool is a large, family-friendly saltwater pool, the Arion Pool is a beautifully designed adults-only infinity pool, then there’s an indoor pool housed inside the spa. Inspired by ancient Greek healing traditions, the spa offers personalised treatments across 10 dedicated rooms, alongside a hydrotherapy zone and private suites.

For the more active, there are three tennis courts, a basketball court and jogging trails, while water sports include stand-up paddleboarding, sea kayaking and snorkelling. The resort has several restaurants including the one Michelin-starred Mediterranean restaurant, Pelagos and three beachfront tavernas. We ate lunch at Taverna 37 right on the water’s edge, where we shared a selection of delicious mezes, a Greek salad and the fresh fish of the day.

Another highlight of our culinary experience was dining at Zolotas Beach – a pop-up intimate space only open during the summer months, where we enjoyed a spectacular fire-driven Mediterranean menu courtesy of chef Theodore Papanikolaou.

There’s no shortage of things to do here, ranging from classes and workshops to sightseeing excursions including bike and helicopter tours or boat trips to nearby ruins and islands such as Hydra. Children are also well catered for with daily activities at the Kids For All Seasons club.

For a more exclusive experience, you can opt for a bespoke yacht cruise if you want to enjoy the Athenian Riviera in a more relaxed way, taking a dip in the azure waters of the Aegean or simply enjoying a picnic in a hidden cove. It’s the perfect balance to exploring the wonders of the historical city of Athens.
