The fashion giant tells us about his second venture in Mayfair

Billionaire New Yorker Michael Kors is opening a new townhouse in the heart of Mayfair, not far from his existing store on Regent Street.

He explained that the new shop would be a one-of-a-kind concept store, showcasing his designs in a new setting.

“When I was growing up, people went to their favourite stores and I think they felt at home.

“There was a more residential warmth to the shopping experience back then. It wasn’t just about speed and convenience.

“I wanted this store to bring back some of that charm and comfort, so that when you step inside, you feel a little calmer and your day feels a little more luxurious,” he said.

Kors, who lives in Manhatten with his husband Lance Le Pere, says he notices the differences between his New York customers and his London customers.

“I think that women in London are pretty fearless when it comes to fashion and they find a lot of pleasure in getting dressed and wearing something that brings them joy but also has some polish to it.

“New Yorkers have their own version of that, it’s just a little more casual,” he says.

The designer, who has dressed everyone from Angelina Jolie to Michelle Obama, visits London several times a year.

“In and around Mayfair, I like to go for a walk in Hyde Park and take in the Diana Memorial Fountain and the Serpentine Gallery.

“I also love the Aman Spa at The Connaught,” he adds.

Looking to the future of the fashion industry, he says: “I think we’ll continue to see designers experiment with material and fabrics that are recycled or more sustainable in one way or another.”
